Residents

At the University of Oklahoma, we take pride in our internal medicine residents.  As reflected in board passage rates as well as exemplary patient care, our residents are among the finest anywhere.  Over the past five years, in addition to outstanding academic and clinical performance, our resident research performance has improved considerably, with a record number participating in our annual departmental Stewart Wolf Research Day, as well as the state American College of Physicians Annual Scientific Meeting.  Participation includes posters and oral presentations, original research and clinical cases.  Participation in regional and national meetings is up, too, as is journal publication among our house staff.

Teaching is another aspect of medical practice, and our residents are instrumental in the teaching of medical students.  To this end, all of our residents participate in a “Teaching Residents to Teach” workshop, which focuses on the basic principles of teaching, teaching on rounds, and how to give feedback.  We feel formal teaching of these skills is often given short-shrift, and so make a point of giving our residents the skills necessary to become—and remain throughout their careers—excellent teachers.  Evidence of their teaching effectiveness is found in the consistently high evaluations received by our house staff from their medical student trainees.

Finally, we think medical education can be fun-- and our residents share this feeling.  You’ll find our residents to be an exciting and stimulating group of people with many and varied outside interests.  Many participate in sports ranging from triathlons and skeet shooting to indoor soccer league.  Travel and political discourse are common diversions, and “sushi night” at a local sushi bar has become the stuff of legends.

When you visit for an interview, you’ll have the opportunity to meet and have dinner with our residents, free of a faculty presence.  We think it is important that a program allow residents to speak candidly about the program to applicants.  And we think you’ll like what they have to say.

So, come meet our enthusiastic residents and see for yourself the excellence that is part of every OU internal medicine resident!
